1. Back to School

Approximately 27 percent of the U.S. population is enrolled in school—from nursery school to college. Although some may attend school year-round, many are now getting ready for the 2009-2010 school year.

To help prepare, visit USA.gov’s Back to School page. You’ll find information on:

  • Financial aid
  • Local libraries
  • Education reform
  • Vaccinations
  • School breakfast and lunch programs
  • Child care
  • And much more!

Several states offer sales tax holidays at some point during the month of August. Often, the sales tax holiday is limited to a fixed dollar amount and only applies to the purchase of certain items, such as clothes, school supplies, and computers. Check out a list of sales tax holidays in 2009 to see if your state participates.

National Immunization Awareness Month is intended to remind Americans about the importance of vaccinations throughout their lifespan.

Most vaccines are given during the first five to six years of life because young children are most vulnerable to infection. Other immunizations are recommended for adolescents and adults and those traveling outside the United States.

Whatever stage of life you’re in, know the recommended vaccinations.
